Important notes on router placement

The location of your router can affect the performance of your Wi-Fi and in turn affect the performance you can get for the devices you have connected.
Placement of the router is one of the first things to check to see if following the below suggestions improves your connectivity.

  •  Install your wireless router in a central location
  • Avoid unnecessary obstructions. Anything that comes between the router and the device you want to connect will reduce the signal strength and could result in drop outs. Ideally you would want your router on top of a surface rather than in a cupboard. Some people like to place their router as near as they can to the ceiling to combat this.
  • Install your router at least 1 meter away from other appliances that send wireless signals, for example microwaves ovens, cordless phones and baby monitors. This is also the case for electrical equipment as this can also be a source of interference.
  • Make sure you are not sharing the same Wi-Fi channel as your neighbor, there are 13 channels to choose from if you are this could also cause interference with your signal.
